It’s been developed using Microsoft’s ASP.NET platform, and it’s available to download for free. Now free software usually means that there are critical features missing, but that’s not the case with nopCommerce. It comes out of the box with impressive features (such as multi-site and multi-vendor support) that you’d expect to find in more premium platforms.

The only catch with nopCommerce is that it’s not for everyone. You need to be a developer, or more specifically an ASP.NET develop in order to use its functionality. With a solid ASP.NET dev team, you can get a lot out of this platform as it is highly customizable. PrestaShop is an open source shopping cart solution. The platform is used by 270,000 stores worldwide so it’s got a fairly large user base. As an open source ecommerce platform, PrestaShop is completely free to download and use. This puts it (broadly speaking) into the same category as WooCommerce, nopCommerce and OpenCart. You’ll have to pay for your own hosting and domain (not that expensive), and at some point you will have to integrate modules (plugins) into your store, which is where it can get expensive.

Setting up PrestaShop requires technical skills. If you’re not a developer, you’d be better served with hosted ecommerce services such as BigCommerce or Selz. For smaller businesses with no in-house development team, PrestaShop is hard to recommend. PrestaShop developers also tend to be expensive so it’s not really a pragmatic option for a small business.

For larger businesses that have development resources however, PrestaShop is a compelling option.
